An aurora is a natural light display that illuminates the Earth's sky, primarily visible in high-latitude regions near the Arctic and Antarctic. These enchanting displays feature dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that dance across the sky in the form of curtains, rays, spirals, or flickering sheets. Frutiger Aurora emerged in the early 2000s, towards the end of the Y2K era, and maintained its popularity well into the early 2010s.

The Evolution of Frutiger Aurora

Frutiger Aurora first appeared alongside the rise of Frutiger Aero, near the end of the Y2K aesthetic's prominence (circa 1997-2004). The subgenre's first significant appearance was in Mac OS 10, where it was featured as a series of wallpapers. As Frutiger Aero gained popularity in the mid-2000s and into the early 2010s, Frutiger Aurora followed suit, primarily in the form of desktop wallpapers, as seen in Mac OS 10. Microsoft also prominently incorporated Frutiger Aurora into their "Windows Aero" design language, which can be observed in Windows Vista and Windows 7.

However, during the mid-2010s (around 2012-2013), the "Frutiger" family of aesthetics began to wane in popularity. In 2015, Microsoft released Windows 10, which departed from the "Windows Aero" design language in favor of a more streamlined appearance. By 2017, with the rise of Flat Design, Frutiger Aero and its subgenres had largely been supplanted.
