Frutiger Eco Aesthetic
Frutiger Eco is an expansive sub-aesthetic of Frutiger Aero that emphasizes renewable energy and living in harmony with nature while incorporating futuristic themes and architecture centered around sustainability. This popular aesthetic was prevalent in images, advertising, and graphic design throughout the mid-2000s and early 2010s, aiming to raise awareness of climate change while encouraging optimism through visuals portraying an eco-friendly and advanced utopian future. These themes share similarities with Solarpunk and Cyberparadism, but Frutiger Eco distinguishes itself by aligning more closely with the visual language and history of Frutiger Aero. The name "Frutiger Eco" is derived from its parent aesthetic and the term "eco," referring to ecology or the environment.
The Evolution of Frutiger Eco
The Rise of Eco-Consciousness (2000s)
Frutiger Eco gained traction in the early to mid-2000s alongside Frutiger Aero, with both aesthetics employing a bright and glossy futuristic look to inspire hope for the future. Frutiger Eco, in particular, embodied this sentiment using imagery associated with both the future and nature to create a sense of an eco-friendly utopia. This focus on futuristic sustainability was a response to growing concerns about climate change at the time (concerns that persist to this day), and Frutiger Eco, along with Frutiger Aero and its sub-aesthetics, sought to alleviate these worries and encourage optimism. As a result, Frutiger Eco was widely adopted by corporations, with its imagery being used to promote values of eco-friendliness and sustainability. During this period, a more corporate version of Frutiger Eco emerged, known as Renewable Corporate Futurism.
Waning Popularity (2010s)
In the mid-2010s, Frutiger Eco, along with Frutiger Aero, began to lose its appeal as an aesthetic and design style. By 2017, with the rise of Flat Design, the "Frutiger" look had largely fallen out of mainstream popularity.
However, Frutiger Eco still persists and remains quite popular in the realm of cleaning product logo design.
Subgenres of Frutiger Eco
Renewable Corporate Futurism
Renewable Corporate Futurism (RCF), also known as Stock Eco Office, Stecoffism, or Solargraphic, is a subgenre of Frutiger Eco, Frutiger Aero, and Corporate aesthetics. Renewable Corporate Futurism promoted environmental positivity during a time when global warming was (and still is) a significant issue. It combines the utopian, futuristic, humanist, and naturist themes of Frutiger Aero and Frutiger Eco with corporate office-based imagery and values. RCF rose to prominence in the late 2000s and lost popularity in the late 2010s.
The Visual Language of Frutiger Eco
Frutiger Eco's visuals are a unique blend of advanced technology and nature, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendliness (similar to Solarpunk and Cyberparadism). The futuristic cities depicted in Frutiger Eco often showcase advanced technology that incorporates renewable energy sources, such as solar panels (a prevalent visual in Frutiger Eco), as well as the integration of plant life into the architecture of buildings. The more corporate graphic design elements of Frutiger Eco include depictions of the Earth (usually, but not always, in green), solar panels, plant life such as trees, and general iconography related to nature and sustainability. The influence of Frutiger Aero on Frutiger Eco manifests itself through the use of motifs such as glossy textures, "humanism," bokeh effects, bubbles, and abstract flourishes.
